PLASTICS REDUCTION INITIATIVE

Reducing Hazardous Waste to Care for Our Environment

With the significant increase in usage of single-use plastic globally in recent years, countries all around the world are facing difficulties in dealing with the sheer volume of plastic waste generated. This has led to pollution of our land and waterways, impacting the ecosystem around us — plant life, wildlife and marine life.

Recent studies have also shown that traces of such pollution can also be found in human systems from eating contaminated food sources and through particles found in the air.

How Do Plastics Harm the Environment and Human Health?

From 2004 to 2014 — just a short span of 10 years — the world’s production of plastics grew by 38% to over 300 million metric tons, nearly half of which was generated from single-use products.

As plastics are not biodegradable, they remain in landfills, waterways, and oceans for hundreds of years.

Some harmful effects of plastics to our environment and health include:
  • Compromised marine life quality – A shocking estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic waste enters our oceans every year. This affects the quality of marine life and contaminates the food we consume from these oceans.
  • Damaging air quality – Burning plastic is a common way to reduce the quantity of plastic refuse; this releases toxic fumes into the air, compromising air quality in our communities.
  • Food contamination – Bisphenol A (BPA), an industrial chemical found in plastics — usually in plastic packaging or food storage containers, can leak out into food and drinks. Some studies have shown microplastics present in human lungs and digestive systems from air and food contamination.

Interplex’s Plastics Reduction Initiatives

At Interplex, we believe that we should do our part to significantly reduce plastic pollution, starting with the elimination of single-use plastic bottles of water at all of our global facilities.

On the ground, this entails doing away with the usage of individual plastic water bottles and installing water-dispensing units at our facilities, complemented by the use of biodegradable or reusable drinkware.

Latest Updates

We are committed to eliminate single-use plastic water bottles in our factories, offices and R&D centers. We have installed water dispensers across our global facilities and encouraged our staff to use reusable drinkware or biodegradable cups.

Started in FY21, this initiative has reduced approximately 2.15 tons of plastic waste each year.
